Over the past few years, ski technology has evolved drastically. Today, there are many different types of skis designed for different skiing styles and ability levels. Whether you are a beginner discovering the slopes for the first time or an experienced skier looking for maximum performance, choosing the right skis can make a huge difference to your skiing experience.
At White Storm Ski Rental, we help every skier find the perfect equipment for their level, style, and snow conditions.
What Skis Should I Choose as a Beginner? – Blue & Red Category
When learning to ski, confidence is key. As a beginner, you need skis that are easy to control and forgiving. Beginner skis are generally shorter and more flexible, making them easier to turn and less demanding on your legs.
These skis are built with softer materials that allow them to bend more easily. When you initiate a turn, the ski naturally follows your movements without requiring excessive effort.
A shorter ski is also recommended for beginners as it is lighter and easier to manoeuvre. We usually recommend a ski that reaches chin when standing upright, depending on your confidence level.
After just a few days on the slopes, many beginners progress quickly. At that stage, you may benefit from a slightly longer and stiffer ski that offers more stability and responsiveness.
At White Storm, our team is trained to assess your level and recommend the skis that best suit your needs. As your technique improves throughout the week, you can always return to the shop and upgrade to a more suitable model.
What Skis Should I Choose as an Intermediate Skier? – Red & Black Category
As your skiing improves, you can move towards more technical skis.
For intermediate skiers, we generally recommend skis with medium stiffness and a length that reaches approximately eye level when standing upright. These skis provide a great balance between performance, stability, and forgiveness.
They offer the responsiveness needed to improve your technique while remaining comfortable and easy to handle, even at higher speeds.
As an intermediate skier, you may also start developing preferences regarding your skiing style.
What Is a Piste Ski?
As the name suggests, piste skis are designed primarily for groomed slopes.
They are the most common type of ski and are ideal for enjoying the 600 km of pistes available across the Three Valleys ski area. Piste skis are generally narrower, allowing for quicker edge-to-edge transitions and more precise turns.
If you spend most of your time skiing on groomed runs, a piste ski is often the best choice.
What Is an All-Mountain Ski?
All-mountain skis are slightly wider than piste skis and are often chosen a little longer.
They are designed to perform well both on and off-piste. If you enjoy exploring the side of the slopes and skiing occasional powder snow, an all-mountain ski offers the perfect compromise between versatility and performance.
Still Unsure Which Skis You Need?
The difference between a piste ski and an all-mountain ski can sometimes be subtle. Snow conditions also play an important role in choosing the right equipment.
Our experienced team will be happy to guide you and recommend the ski that best matches your ability and expectations.
What Skis Should I Choose as an Advanced Skier? – Diamond & Infinity Category
Advanced skiers should first identify the type of skiing they enjoy most. Snow conditions are equally important and can greatly influence the choice of equipment.
Carving Skis
Carving skis are designed for fast, aggressive skiing on groomed slopes.
They are narrow, stiff, and highly responsive. Their construction allows for powerful edge grip and dynamic turns, giving you maximum precision and performance.
All-Mountain Skis
All-mountain skis are slightly more forgiving than carving skis.
They are built a little wider and offer excellent versatility. They are ideal if you enjoy carving on groomed runs while also exploring fresh snow and ungroomed terrain.
Powder Skis
When conditions are perfect and fresh snow is abundant, powder skis truly come into their own.
These skis are wider, longer, and often more flexible, allowing you to float effortlessly through deep powder.
Freestyle Skis
If you enjoy spending time in the snow park, freestyle skis are the perfect choice.
They feature a twin-tip design that allows skiing and landing in both directions. They are specifically built for jumps, tricks, and creative skiing.
